You Better Work. Network, That Is.
One of the most important things we can do as working women is to support one another in a world where we are often still paid less-than-equal as compared to our male counterparts. Meeting women who share similar goals and focus can be both inspiring and empowering. Sharing our experiences in the working world with other women may very well be the motivation to keep us forging ahead on our existing paths, or give us the courage to make a daunting change in careers. But how do you meet women who are like-minded and driven? Networking.
Yes, I know. The term ‘networking’ isn’t terribly appealing, often eliciting eye rolls and heavy sighs. If this is your immediate reaction to the idea of attending a networking event, then you surely haven’t been to one hosted by Jesse Draper of The Valley Girl Show. As CEO of The Valley Girl Inc., Jesse knows what it is to be a successful female entrepreneur. She’s interviewed some of the most notable figures in business on her show, including Ted Turner and Sheryl Sandberg. Jesse has a knack for connecting like-minded forward-thinking women. Networking seems to have a cumulative effect. One small introduction may lead down several paths; one simple question may create endless possibilities. Never has the phrase “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” been more true. So, ladies, network. Even if you think it’s awkward to begin a conversation with a total stranger, even if you think it’s lame. You never know where a simple “hello” may lead.
In good networking spirit, Autumn, Jenn and I attended last week’s Valley Girls Group networking event featuring keynote speaker Alexa von Tobel, Certified Financial Planner, CEO and founder of Learnvest. Our recent interview with Alexa is a must-read, in which she shares her journey of creating one of the most successful financial planning companies in operation today. If you don’t know about Learnvest, you’ll want to pay close attention now. Learnvest is an advice-driven financial planning service with realistic budgeting to help you live the life you want. Financially Fearless is Alexa’s recently-released guide to getting your finances in check. Alexa believes all people, no matter the size of their bank accounts, should have access to financial advice, offering expert financial guidance at affordable rates.
So what’s the take-away? We were captivated by the invigorating talk given by Alexa Von Tobel, a woman so clearly enthusiastic about her company and its mission. We emerged with an hour’s worth of financial advice, as well as a copy of Alexa’s book to voraciously read at home. We’ve forged a handful of relationships that we’re already moving forward with, including an upcoming meeting the lovely Meredith from Goldman Sachs, (pictured above left), and are scheduling a coffee date with Cate, (pictured above right), to learn all about her site, 11 Betties, an online math resource for “fierce young females.” The more connected to the savvy business women of our communities we are, the stronger we all become.
