Trend Report: September Style

In case you’ve been living under a rock and missed the FW13 show season, I have news for you: Grunge is back and in a big way! Don’t be afraid to channel your inner Nirvana as this updated version is a grown-up take of the over-sized garb we donned back in the nineties. Surprisingly sophisticated with just enough edge for those days you’re feeling extra sassy!

1. Bag

There is a real soft spot in my heart for silver metallic bags, I have many and always want more. They go with everything, are not season-specific, and tend to look better the more they’re worn. Versace did it right this time! I typically need a bigger bag in the fall and winter. Gotta fit all those the hats, gloves and scarves we’re constantly taking on and off this time of year!

2. Dress

To me, fall signifies the beginning of a new year, almost more so than January 1st, most likely because for much of my life it involved a new year of school full of unknown adventures and experiences. I am crazy over this dress by Edun. The drape and silhouette are surprisingly lady-like, but the sheerness and plaid make me think naughty school-girl uniform. It can go any way you want it to.

3. Coat

Part of the reason I love NYC is because of the seasons. The snow flakes and turning leaves make the holidays feel real, consequence is that the chilly air necessitates a coat! In LA I tried to wear a coat whenever I could pull it off ; now I wear them because I need to. Problem is that I moved here with a summer wardrobe and am notoriously on the hunt every season for the perfect coat. This year Chloe is the winner with this gorgeous confetti bouclé-tweed cocoon coat. It’s more interesting than basic black and still considered a neutral, which maximizes the price per wear. It feels like a big hug. You’ll be smiling through the storm.

4. Leggings

Layering just becomes a way of life in the cooler weather and can gracefully bring your summer dresses through to fall and winter. There are many style options to keep the stems warm, and leggings don’t look like they’re going anywhere anytime soon. But please, do all of us a favor and toss out those baggy-kneed old cotton leggings to embrace a more civilized approach. The Row absolutely nailed it with these leather/suede combo pair – as comfy as pajamas but chic enough to wear everywhere, everyday!

5. Booties

Thank you, Michael Kors, for finally making me the perfect bootie! I have been searching far and wide for the pair that hits that sweet spot on my ankle; just below the bone at the thinnest part, making my legs look miles long. The heel height is just right, and the gold zips add the right amount of toughness to perfectly compliment the look.
