Trend Report: Emerald Elements
Sometimes I struggle to find the balance between buying the trends and investing in the classics. I always like to be in the know and wear the latest styles found in my monthly fashion mags. However, as much as I like a good trend, my mother taught me that investing in the classics is money better spent.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to find the happy medium, and my pocketbook thanks me. November’s report focuses on identifying key trends and incorporating those ideas with classic shapes to give you a well-rounded wardrobe for all year long.
1. The (Ex)-Boyfriend Button Down
Often one item can successfully conquer two trends. With the chambray shirt and military jacket trends still in full effect, Madewell’s Ex-boyfriend Station Work Shirt provides the shape of the perfect denim shirt. It’s long enough to peek out from beneath a chunky sweater, yet roomy enough to wear over a turtleneck, (yes, turtleneck), or a great shift dress, just as you would the quintessential olive green military jacket.
2. Velvet Blazer
Move over, classic black blazer. This year it’s all about lush texture and bright colored staples! Choosing classic jewel-toned colors like a navy, burgundy or teal, like this JCrew option, will easily transition your trendsetting jacket beyond one measly season.
3. Versatile Printed Shift Dress
A great printed shift dress, like this one from Splendid, is as important as the LBD. The key is finding a simple print that can transition throughout the year. I am lusting over the bright purple, red and white polka dots that dance all over this classic navy shift.
Throw on your favorite flat boots and cozy anorak jacket for an effortless weekend uniform. If you’re feeling really funky, try a pair of chunky, gray thigh-high socks for an edgier look. Cinch with a metallic belt to add shape, pair with sheer tights and pointed flats for a work-appropriate look.
Leopard has always been a classic print, but this year it is doubling as a full-blown trend. The same can be said about the classic Beatle-inspired Chelsea boot. This Nine West bootie combines the two classics to create a shoe intended to replace those worn out black flats you wear with everything. (If you read the October Trend Report you will know that side tassels make this the perfect pair of shoes for the season!)
5. Emerald Green
Nail Polish is always an easy way to go bold with the season’s trends. Greens have been a popular nail color for the past year. From minty and mossy to the Chanel metallic green, the color has no intention of going away anytime soon.
Though emerald is a pretty safe color to incorporate into your fall wardrobe, adding the trendy color to your fingertips guarantees you are on point. I am in love with the deep, rich color Essie’s Stylenomics offers. Complete the look with one rogue silver glitter nail to really spice up your autumn mani!
