Palm Springs Style
After a very busy six months, my hubby and I planned a long-overdue romantic weekend away. Only two hours outside of Los Angeles, Palm Springs is the perfect weekend escape for Angelenos, so after I was approached with a proposal to style Rachel’s Pally’s spring line, I knew the desert would make a gorgeous backdrop for some fun style photos, too. You can see my guest blog with all the style details over on the Rachel Pally blog, and read on below for more personal shots and details about our weekend road trip.
My favorite road trip icons are the dinosaurs off the 10 freeway near the Cabazon outlets. I have great memories of stopping here with my family on our way out to camping trips in the desert throughout my childhood. The gigantic creatures have slowly become more weathered, slightly sad, (and oddly, one has been co-opted as the site of a creationism museum), but they’re still childhood icons to me and I jumped at the chance to pop off the 10 and take some funny snaps with my man. Here I’m wearing my own black shorts and fedora, Michael Kors sandals, a necklace from JewelMint, and Rachel Pally‘s swingy Pierre white jersey top.
We left early on a Friday morning and after grabbing coffee, we were lucky enough to beat the sometimes hellish traffic heading out of LA on the weekends, so we arrived with plenty of time to spare at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs. The Ace is a longtime favorite of mine, (I held my 30th birthday party poolside there), and I love the hipster vibe and low-key, low-pressure scene. We toasted our no-stress arrival with a bottle of Champagne, then I slipped a yellow mini caftan over my bathing suit to head down to the pool for a nap.
Like any busy couple with kids, my husband and I struggle to find quality time to connect in our day to day lives, which makes weekends like this all the more important for staying close. We made time to have a special dinner, so I went with a desert-luxe look in a long Preetma dress, cork wedge heels, rings from JewelMint, and a vintage gold purse–my mom’s from the 80’s, actually– to add a little extra glam. Annnd of course we picked up a jar of moonshine on our way back to the hotel, because, y’know, that’s just what we do on date night in Palm Springs.
I always love the first morning wake-up in a new city; the sun feels just a little bit warmer and the day is teeming with expectation. After we dragged ourselves out of our comfy bed, we hit Cheeky’s in downtown Palm Springs for tea, croissants, cream-cheese scrambled eggs and I kid you not, a bacon sampler plate. Oh yeah. After we were properly fueled up, we took advantage of the weekend activities available during Palm Springs Modernism week, and hit the contemporary art show for an afternoon of inspiration. I wore Rachel Pally’s sunny yellow romper with a jacket from 21, a Trina Turk bag, an Anthropologie necklace and my favorite See by Chloe heels.
Even on a weekend escape, we run into people from our life in Los Angeles, (hi, Briana + Brooke!), so we took advantage of fate and met up with everyone for margaritas at the Saguaro. This uber-hip hotel has been popping up all over blogs because of its fun Panetone color palette and laid-back hipster vibe, so of course we busted out an impromptu photo shoot to make good use of all the colorful backdrops! Here I’m wearing the Delmy dress in Granita Folk Stripe, paired with my own black clutch to edge it up a bit for evening and Briana’s adorable vintage style below can be seen in the recent Vintage On the Go.
First thing the next morning, we jumped in our car to go pick up our son (we missed you!) from my parents’ house in San Diego, where he’d been throughly entertained all weekend with robots, trains and chickens. Everyone was refreshed from the weekend and we were ready to launch back into the work week with newfound energy and greater connection — and I had some lovely new pieces in my weekend wardrobe. Thanks for road-tripping with me, and check out the Rachel Pally blog for more photos!
