At Home: Creating a Nook

The hustle and bustle of the hectic holiday season is now almost behind us and we’re all making promising New Years resolutions that will hopefully better our minds, bodies and souls. In order to stick to those oh-so-easy to break resolutions that inevitably lure us back into the banality of our predictable daily routines, I advocate creating a space just for you and you alone. Whether you have the luxury of living alone, rendering your home entirely your space, or share a home with a crew of kids and a loving, but often times needy husband, a serene nook you can retreat to is a necessity for your sanity’s salvation! Even if you don’t have an entire room you can dedicate to souly facilitate your own relaxation, carving out an intimate space wherever you can find one will help you escape the days stresses and help you recharge. Your designated ‘nook’ may be curling up in your favorite comfy chair nestled in a corner, or lounging on a chaise in your master bedroom where you can close the door and take in the peacefulness of the house late at night, or it may even be as intimate as indulging in a warm bath with your favorite lavender scented bubble bath. Whatever defines your nook, make sure your respite reflects you and creates a comforting space that allows you to recharge even for a moment, and be sure to visit this space often!

A perfect nook to steal away from the mania of the everyday would be nestled underneath a window overlooking rolling hills with a steady stream of sunlight pouring in, set between two bookcases in a back hall of an Normandy style house and would be personalized with these luxurious items: a soft velvet upholstered chaise like this settee to lounge on, a modern side table with legs that slide right under the settee, on which would sit this inlay tray to rest a bone china cup and saucer coupled with Parisian macaroons and petit fours, graphic throw pillows to lounge on, stylish lighting for both ambient and task lighting while reading these fabulously indulgent F. Scott Fitzgerald books, a sumptuous throw to snuggle up under, with an exotic Moroccan rug underfoot. I could spend hours curled up reading and daydreaming in a nook like this.
